Osage Nation observes Sovereignty Day 2012

The Osage Nation is celebrating Osage Sovereignty Day today (March 9).

The day pays homage to the reformed tribal government now entering its sixth year. The 2006 Osage Constitution was signed on March 11 that year.

A celebratory dance starts this afternoon at the Osage County Fairgrounds Ag Building (south of Pawhuska off State Highway 99).

All tribal government offices will be closed today and will reopen Monday March 12.

On Sovereignty Day, The Nation will hear from Principal Chief John Red Eagle who will deliver his annual State of the Nation address at 10 a.m in the Wah-Zha-Zhi Cultural Center in Pawhuska.

The Sovereignty Day Dance activities start at 2 p.m. as follows:

Gourd Dance at 2 p.m.
Supper at 5 p.m.
Gourd Dance at 6 p.m.
Parade-in 7 p.m.

There will be a dance contest this evening in the following categories: Tiny Tots; Men’s (straight, fancy, grass, teens); and Women’s (cloth, buckskin, fancy shawl, jingle, teens).

Masters of Ceremonies: Archie Mason Jr. & Bruce Cass

Head Man Dancer: Raymond Lasley

Head Lady Dancer: Asa Cunningham

Host Gourd Dancers: Osage Gourd Dancers

Host Drum: Soldier Creek

Arena Director: Otto Hamilton
