Joan Barrone

Joan Delphine Barrone, longtime resident of Fairfax, passed away Monday, August 30, 2010 at the Stillwater Medical Center. She was 76.

Joan was born March 31, 1934 West of Fairfax, the daughter of Adolphus Graves and Josephine (Henderson) Graves. She was the granddaughter of Simon and Mary Henderson and Frank and Bertha (Long) Graves. She was a 1952 graduate of Fairfax High School. She then attended Vo-Tech and in 1981 completed the nursing program at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa. She was married to Charles Gilbert Barrone on December 22, 1954 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Joan had been employed most recently with the Fairfax Senior Citizens Nutrition Program. She took great pride in her Native American heritage and was a past-president of the Pah-Sue-Lee Club. She was a member of the First Osage Baptist Church. Her enjoyments included reading her Bible and Christian books, traveling, especially to Colorado, all Native American gatherings, cooking and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna M. Barrone of Fairfax and Brenda Hardin of Oklahoma City; one sister, Judy Tiger of Fairfax; three grandchildren, Charles Taos Barrone, Steven Charles Hardin and Michael James Hardin; several great grandchildren and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Charles Anthony Barrone; one infant daughter, Sharon Kay Barrone; one brother, Howard Sonny Graves and two sisters, Anita Whitlatch and Colleen Graves.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at the Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the First Osage Baptist Church in Fairfax. Burial will be in the Fairfax Cemetery under the direction of the Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home.

Casket bearers will be Steven Hardin, Michael Hardin, Joseph Goodeagle, Zachary Paul Martinez, Elijah Jim Martinez, Paxton Charles Evans and Charles Taos Barrone.

Barry Lee Cheshewalla, Sr. 1941-2010

Our beloved Father and Papa was born on Feb. 21, 1941 in Pawhuska, OK and passed away May 28, 2010 in Colton, CA following a long battle with COPD.

He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert Cheshewalla, JR and Margaret Bright Cheshewalla of Pawhuska, OK.

He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Henrietta Cheshewalla, son of Barry L. Cheshewalla, Jr., daughters Tina L. Cheshewalla, Melissa M. Cheshewalla, four grandsons, eight granddaughters, and one great granddaughter.

Barry was a man of few words but had a kind and giving heart. You left us loving memories, your love is still our guide; although we cannot see you, you’re always by our side. Our family chains’ been broken and things wont seem the same; but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again. You will sorely be missed Pops.

Daniels Lee Cass Obituary

DANIELS LEE CASS passed away Monday, June 28, 2010 in the Jane Phillips Medical Center, Bartlesville, Oklahoma at the age of 75.

Dan was born January 7, 1935 in Ponca City, Oklahoma, the son of Roy Andrew and Myrtle (Daniels) Cass. He attended Jones Academy and then graduated from Chilocco Indian School in 1953. November 12, 1953, he married who he thought was the most beautiful woman in the world, Marion Cunningham in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They have been married for 57 years. Before retirement, Dan had worked in oilfield construction, spent 18 years working at the Pawhuska Journal-Capital newspaper, and then worked for 16 years for the Osage BIA Minerals Department. Dan was the first “sergeant of arms” for the Osage Nation Congress and also worked with OERB. Dan was always supportive of the Osage Culture and customs.
For over 30 years, he served on the committee for the In lon ska Dances, as well as helping his wife and family cook for the dances. He enjoyed teaching students young and old how to play handgame and Indian Dice. He helped as a counselor with the alcohol abuse programs. Dan was also involved with the construction of the new Wakon Iron Hall when it was built. He received numerous awards for his efforts within the Osage community, including “Employee of the Year” from the BIA.

In his spare time, Dan enjoyed raising chickens, his dogs, and coon hunting. He loved watching his grandkids and great grandkids participate in football and wrestling. Dan and his wife, Marion, had raised many kids over the years - not only their own children, but his younger brothers and sisters and some of their grandchildren. They were Santa’s Helpers during the holidays, portraying Mr. & Mrs. Claus for the City. Dan was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and also participated in the Native American Church.

Surviving are: His wife: Marion Cass; His daughter and son: Daniese Cass and Sammy Cass; Four grandchildren: Bruce, Danielle, Jason and Samantha Cass; 11 great grandchildren Gene Big Soldier III, Tristian, Tennessee, Landon, and AydDan Marion McCartney, Corlin and Logan Cass, Olivia, Ryan, Christian, and Katelynn Cass; A sister and brother: Cynthia Pradmore and Leroy Cass; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, two sons - Milton Bruce Cass and Edward Lee Cass and seven siblings - Dominic and George Williams; Charles and Jim Cass; Charlotte Joe Fowler, Edna Conley and Lila Dooling.

Rosary was held on Wednesday, June 30, at 7:00 PM at the Wakon Iron Chapel, Pawhuska. Traditional Indian Services where held Thursday, July 1, at 8 a.m. also at the Chapel with Eddie RedEagle Jr. officiated. Funeral Mass followed at 10:00 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Chris Daigle officiated. Interment held at the Pawhuska City Cemetery. McCartney’s Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

My grandmother and our family would like to thank everyone for the prayers, food, money, and love that was extended to our family. We would also like to thank the Doctors, Nurses, and EMT staff that worked so diligently with Grandpa at Pawhuska Hospital and in Bartlesville Hospital. A special Thank You to the Priests, who visited the hospital. Thank you doesn’t seem like enough, but we sincerely appreciated everyone’s kindness, may you all receive many blessings.

Reuben Reed DeRoin Obituary

Reuben Reed DeRoin was born on November 6, 1926 in Hominy, Oklahoma to Reuben H. DeRoin and Ruth Ferguson DeRoin. He has passed from his life on Friday, April 23, 2010 in Hominy, Oklahoma having reached the age of 83 years, 5 months, and 17 days. He received his education at Hominy Public Schools and entered the Air Force in August of 1945. He served with the 13th Air Force 1404 M. P. Co. until his honorable discharge in February of 1947. He played Aggie football through 1949 and was drafted by the Chicago Bears. He played with the Chicago Bears until he sustained an injury and returned home to Hominy and worked in the oilfields until 1978 for the Osage Tribal Minerals.

Reuben is survived by his wife, Meleaia DeRoin, Hominy, Oklahoma; children, JoReeda Clark, Hominy, Oklahoma; Debra DeRoin, Hominy, Oklahoma; Denice DeRoin, Hominy, Oklahoma; James DeRoin, Hominy, Oklahoma; Caroline DeRoin, Lompoc, California; Reuben Battiste DeRoin, Hominy, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; sister, Martha Ruth Davis, Hominy, Oklahoma; brother, Cecil DeRoin, Red Rock, Oklahoma; and plus a number of other relatives, and many friends.

Reuben was preceded in death by his parents, Reuben H. DeRoin and Ruth DeRoin, three grandsons, Douglas Reed, Joseph Clark and J.T. DeRoin, and sister, Genieve Satepauhoodle.

Services were held at noon, Monday, April 26 at the Otoe-Missouria Cultural Building, Red Rock, Oklahoma. Interment was at the Otoe-Missouria Cemetery, Red Rock, Oklahoma, under the direction of Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee, Oklahoma.

Joseph A. Quinton Obituary

Pawhuska resident Joseph A. Quinton, 57, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2010 in the Integris Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Joe was born July 27, 1952 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the son of Francis I. and Charity (Ware)(Bearskin) Quinton. A United States Veteran, he served in the Army during the Vietnam era. Joe and the former Sharon Shelton were married June 11, 1971 in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was a member of the Seneca-Cayuga and Osage Tribes of Indians. In his spare time, Joe enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing and gun collecting. His family was the biggest part of his life, most especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife Sharon Quinton of the home; his daughter Melanie K. Quinton of Pawhuska; his grandchildren: Haylee Wilson, Blue Starr, VI, and Cody Starr.

And a host of other family and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Roberta Lovett; and a brother, Charles Ware.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m. in the Indian Camp Chapel, Pawhuska. Interment was in the Pawhuska City Cemetery. Graveside military honors were provided by the American legion and VFW.

McCartney’s Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jed Alvie Barrett Obituary

Jed Alvie Barrett, 38, of Redmond, died Friday from a motorcycle accident.

Jed was born in Lebanon, Oregon, to James and Eva Barrett. Jed graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1990. While continuing his education at college level, Jed was a member of the USFS Hotsots. Jed received his Bachelor’s degree from Western Oregon University n 1995. In 2002, he attended COCC in Bend and received his GIS degree.

Jed resided in Redmond, Oregon, and worked as a water rights specialist for Central Oregon Irrigation District.

He enjoyed spending time with his children, family and friends, riding motorcycles, bodybuilding, fishing, hunting and Geo caching. Jed will be remembered for the love he had for his children and the dedication as Redmond’s Youth League Wrestling Coach.

Jed is survivied by a daughter Jamie, 13; and a son, Jack, 8; and their mother, Julie of Bend; parents, James and Eva Barrett, of Lebanon; brother Vince Barrett and wife, Tina of Lebanon; sister, Sonja Rogers and husband, Kevin o Brownsville; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held at 10 am, May 1, at First Assembly of God Church, 7th and Oak St., Lebanon, Oregon. Paster Garland Rogers officiated.

Alfred Antwine Pryor Obituary

Alfred Antwine Pryor, 79, of Ardmore, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Ardmore, Okla. Antwine belongs to the Osage Tribe where he got the Indian name WA-TSI-KA-WA which means “Dancing Horse”.

Antwine was an educator for over 38 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sapulpa for 48 years, and was a Deacon and Elder as well. Also, he worked in the church Soup Kitchen, belonged to the Locker Room Group and was in Northeastern Hall of Fame in 2006.

Antwine attended eight years of college at Northeastern University and earned a master’s degree. After completing college he taught in various places such as Butler Missouri Junior High School from 1955-1956, Henryetta High School from 1956-1962 where he served as teacher and coach, Sapulpa Junior High School from 1962-1967 as a teacher and coach, Sapulpa High School from 1967-1970 as Dean of Students, Athletic Director and Counselor, Sapulpa High School from 1970-1978 as Athletic Director and Counselor, Sapulpa High School from 1979-1993 as Counselor. He was also Past President of Sapulpa Educational Foundation, altogether teaching for 38 years.

Antwine was preceded in death by his parents, Buster and Dallas (Christley) Pryor; and a son, Mark Douglas Pryor.

Antwine is survived by his wife, Dolores (Westover) Pryor of the home; son, Kyle Antwine Pryor and wife, Alandra of Ardmore, Okla.; grandson, Justin Throneberry and wife, Jamie; great-grandchildren, Shawn McClellan and Justice Throneberry; sisters, Mary Martha Frazier of Prattville, Okla., and Irene Jaeger of Shozlo, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, at Smith Funeral Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church, Sapulpa, Okla. Officiating the service will be the Reverend Craig Gibson.

Bearers will be John Wright, Jess Wright, Steve Frazier, Matt Haney, Iain Bell and John Cockrum.

Interment will be at Green Hill Memorial Gardens, Sapulpa, Okla.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the church, Cancer or Heart Associations.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sapulpa, Okla.

Obituary for Betty Bryant

Betty Bryant, 82, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009.

Vigil and rosary were said at 6 p.m. Monday in Kornerstone Funeral Directors Chapel. Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Bryant was born April 15, 1927, in Hollywood, California, to Harry Oscar and Maudie Jane Tayrien Vulgamott. She married Dewey Bryant on Dec. 20, 1942, in Tempe, Arizona. They moved to Tulia in 1947.

She worked for the Federal Land Bank for seven years and Tulia ISD for 28 years. She was a member of Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey, on Aug. 24, 2005; her parents; and a brother, Ronald Ricky McAnelly.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Harvey and Diana Bozeman of Tulia; a son and daughter-in-law, Dewey and Susan Bryant of Odessa; a sister, Shirley Ann Danner of Sun Lake, Arizona; three grandchildren and their spouses, Ronda Horn and husband Dean of Carnegie, Oklahoma, Buttons Bozeman and wife Andrea of Tulia, and Becky Jean Latham and husband Toby of Odessa; three great-grandchildren , Clinton Dean Horn and Cameron Horn, both of Carnegie, and Brylee Jean Latham of Odessa.

The family suggests memorials be to Odyssey Hospice, 6900 W. Interstate 40, Suite 150, Amarillo 79106; or Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, 513 S. Austin Ave., Tulia 79088.

Juanita Ware West obituary: A politically powerful Osage, her calling card was “My Dear.”

JUANITA WARE WEST, 83, passed away Monday, January 11, 2010, at her home.

Juanita was born April 14, 1926 in Carthage, Missouri, the daughter of Joe and Lura (Clopton) Ware. On March 6, 1947, she married Howard M. West, Jr., in Sedan, Kansas. He preceded her in death May 15, 1985. Over the years, Juanita was active in many organizations. A member of the Republican Party, she was very involved in the political arena of the Osage Tribe. While in Tulsa, she served as a member of the Mayors Indian Affiars, as well as a member of Former Governor Henry Bellmon’s Indian Affairs group. She was a former member and past president of the Monte Cassino School Parent Teacher Organization and past officer of the Tulsa Area YWCA. Juanita was a member of the American War Mothers Association, serving as a past state officer. She was a faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Pawhuska, and was involved in the womens groups of the Church. Just recently, Juanita was honored for 40 years of service by the American Legion Auxiliary. Her calling card, known by all her family and friends, was the phrase “My Dear.”

Surviving are: Her children: Francis West Williams and husband, John, of Fairfax, OK; Howard M. West, III of Austin, TX; Dan G. West of Copan, OK; Nita L. West of Tulsa, OK; Two nieces: Lura Ann Thornton and Debbie Tiger; Her adopted nieces and nephews: Judy Johnson, Davy Watts, Christine Brown, Ted Hazelbaker, Jr., Theresa Hutcheson, Charity Ware, Frank Ware, Cindy Ware and Charla Ware; Nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends. In addition to her husband, Juanita was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Edith.

Rosary will be recited Wednesday, January 13, at 7:00 PM at the Wakon Iron Chapel, Pawhuska. Traditional services will be Thursday, January 14, 8:00 AM, at the Chapel. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 AM, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Pawhuska. Interment will be in the A.J. Powell Cemetery, Hominy, Oklahoma.

Obituary for Sister Maria Edwards

The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Maria Edwards, 84, who died on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at 3:15 a.m., in Ross Hall at the Mother House of the Sisters of Charity.

Born on April 29, 1925 to Richard Travis and Mabel Ann Leahy Edwards, Sister Maria, the former Sybil Ann Edwards, was raised in Pawhuska, OK, a member of a prominent Osage/Irish family. She was a citizen of the Osage Tribe of Indians. As a girl, she took ballet lessons and as a teenager hosted dances on the front porch of her Main Street home. The town theatres, the Ki-he-Kah and the State, played host to her and her brother every weekend, and fostered her love of film. Sybil Ann graduated from Immaculate Conception Grade School and Pawhuska High School. She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on June 8, 1946 and, as Sister Maria, made her profession of vows on August 15, 1948.

Sister Maria received a B.A. in Drama/English/Psychology from Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, KS. She taught at the elementary and secondary levels in Kansas, Missouri, Montana, and Nebraska for many years. In 1975 Sister Maria began her volunteer work at Saint Mary College, and tutored many international students both from Saint Mary College and from Fort Leavenworth.

Survivors include her brother, John T. Edwards and his wife Janet, Oklahoma City, OK; nieces, friends and her SCL Community.

A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 21. Internment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S 4th ST, Leavenworth, KS 66048.
