The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Maria Edwards, 84, who died on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at 3:15 a.m., in Ross Hall at the Mother House of the Sisters of Charity.
Born on April 29, 1925 to Richard Travis and Mabel Ann Leahy Edwards, Sister Maria, the former Sybil Ann Edwards, was raised in Pawhuska, OK, a member of a prominent Osage/Irish family. She was a citizen of the Osage Tribe of Indians. As a girl, she took ballet lessons and as a teenager hosted dances on the front porch of her Main Street home. The town theatres, the Ki-he-Kah and the State, played host to her and her brother every weekend, and fostered her love of film. Sybil Ann graduated from Immaculate Conception Grade School and Pawhuska High School. She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on June 8, 1946 and, as Sister Maria, made her profession of vows on August 15, 1948.
Sister Maria received a B.A. in Drama/English/Psychology from Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, KS. She taught at the elementary and secondary levels in Kansas, Missouri, Montana, and Nebraska for many years. In 1975 Sister Maria began her volunteer work at Saint Mary College, and tutored many international students both from Saint Mary College and from Fort Leavenworth.
Survivors include her brother, John T. Edwards and his wife Janet, Oklahoma City, OK; nieces, friends and her SCL Community.
A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 21. Internment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
