Woodland Cougars win Class A State football championship in overtime

STILLWATER - Willie Zackery scored on Woodland's first play in overtime to give the unbeaten and top-ranked Cougars a 6-0 victory over Stratford on Saturday night in the Class A state championship game at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Stratford, which entered the game unranked and finished with a 12-3 record, had the first possession in the extra period. However, two quarterback keepers by Chase Chamberlain netted 1 yard and his third-down pass was intercepted by Patrick Bartlett.

Stratford came the closest to scoring in regulation after a 36-yard interception return by Tommy Lawson gave the Bulldogs possession at the Woodland 33 in the second period. Stratford marched to the 10-yard line but lost the ball on downs at the 5.

Stratford had earlier lost the ball on downs at the Woodland 19, a third-quarter drive ended in a fumble at the Woodland 28 and turned the ball over on downs at the Woodland 16 in the final period.

Woodland, which finished 14-0, marched 62 yards in the third quarter but a procedure penalty led to four straight incomplete passes.

Woodland threatened twice in the fourth quarter. A 37-yard pass from Bartlett to Tracey Wilson ignited another 62-yard drive, but Woodland fumbled at the Stratford 21. Woodland had another chance when a personal foul on a punt return resulted in a first down at the Stratford 30. However, Zackery was dropped for a 5-yard loss and the Cougars turned the ball over on downs.
