Osage students from across Osage County participated in the 2014 Osage County Livestock Show at the Osage County Fairgrounds March 3-7.
“I thought it was awesome! I got to see a lot of stuff like cattle, and I made new friends and I am doing it again next year,” said Annabelle Yates, 9, who participated in the livestock show.
Participating in the yearly livestock show were 41 Osage students, according to the Osage County Oklahoma State University extension office in Pawhuska. The students came from Pawhuska, Fairfax, Shidler, Barnsdall, Bowring, Burbank, Braden, and Hominy.
“It is a great program it teaches leadership and responsibilities and it is good to continue teaching agriculture,” said Hank Hainzinger, 4H President.
During the county fair Osage students who participate in 4H programs or Future Farmers of America (FFA) exhibited their livestock animals for show and sell. Judging contests were held on the quality of the animals, the muscle mass of the animal, and how they walk, fat vs. meat. The kids will be judged on judging skills of all four categories with four animals in each category chosen from the animals entered in the show. Showmanship Awards were given to the participants demonstrating displaying techniques of their animal in front of the judges.
According to the 2014 Spring Livestock show rules and regulations, ”All steers must have been born between Aug. 15 and Dec. 31 to be eligible to participate in the Spring Show; lambs and goats must have been born since January of the proceeding year.”
Students who won in their divisions won plaques, ribbons, belt buckles and trophies. All awards were presented during the show.
Participants whose animals categorized as market animals will be processed at a butcher shop for food. Breeding animals are put back to their herd; gilts are defined as female pigs with no litters of piglets, and barrows are defined as castrated male hogs, according to the OSU extension office.
“I am proud of each participant of the 4H program and they work really hard to get to the livestock shows,” said Jessica Janzen, extension educator of the OSU extension office.
