Election policy for Osage News staff and Editorial Board ensure unbiased coverage

The Osage News staff and Editorial Board have enacted policies and procedures to ensure ethical, fair and accurate news coverage during Osage Nation elections for its readers.

The News staff and board are not allowed to attend, cover, post updates, post fliers or photos about Osage Nation candidate announcement dinners or meet and greets on any Osage News social media or any personal social media.

The Editorial Board is a three-person board that oversees the operations of the News and its editor. The board members are Jerri Jean Branstetter (chair), Teresa Trumbly Lamsam (vice chair) and Lu King.

The News staff and board, if related to a candidate, must recuse themselves from news coverage during the election. This rule applies in the instance of first and second-degree relatives. Thomas Trumbly, who filed his candidacy on March 12, is the brother of Lamsam. Lamsam will recuse herself from any issues related to Congressional Election coverage.

Congressional Speaker Angela Pratt filed her candidacy for re-election on Feb. 6 and is the niece of Branstetter. Branstetter will recuse herself from any issues related to Congressional Election coverage.

The News staff and board cannot fraternize or join in with ON candidates on Election Day at their camps. The News staff and board can only visit camps for newsgathering purposes.

The Osage News election policy and procedures have been in place since 2013. For more information or questions, please contact Osage News Editor Shannon Shaw Duty at sshaw@osagenation-nsn.gov.
