Today’s 7th Osage Nation Congress governs in a dramatically different fashion compared to the 2nd Osage Nation Congress that I ran for in 2010. Our reformed government is still relatively new and changing. With Supreme Court decisions, ballot questions on constitutional amendments, a growing membership, and constant litigation to protect our sovereignty, all of these things have helped to shape us where we are at today. Simply put, we are blessed, and I believe that.
There are qualities obviously not required but certainly helpful to work alongside the 11 other elected individuals within the Legislative branch. Compromise and listening skills have been assets to me throughout these years. Congressional Members cannot work alone and expect to make change. My cell number has been on the Nations website since I took office 918-688-7068, through conversation and listening I have sponsored appropriations for senior housing in Hominy, and an Osage Nation cemetery. When I am asked to support an initiative if I can get behind it I will, but I am also not afraid to say no. I can appreciate the dedication some people have for certain initiatives, but the reality is while most people are focused on one or two, Congressional Members are responsible for making funding decisions for a wide range of requests and we cannot vote yes for everything.
We need to know more about the people being served and I hope to get an Osage Census Act passed in our Hun-Kah Session. It would benefit us to know how many tribal members own versus rent, how many are permanently disabled, how many single parents we have, how many live below the poverty line.
It has been an honor to be a voice for the people, I humbly ask for your vote and support as I seek re-election. Please join me for a come and go reception Sunday, April 10th from 1pm-3pm at the community building in the Hominy Indian Village.
