The Osage father and daughter team is coming back to Pawhuska for another reading program to promote literacy. On the agenda; free books, cookies, juice and sing-alongs.
San Antonio Osages Kendall Chapman-Ryan, 13, and her father Jim Ryan and mother Carol Chapman-Ryan will be in town March 16 at 1:30 p.m. to visit the Pawhuska Public Library and read to area youth. They were originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 4, but due to a scheduling conflict they changed the date.
The reading program was created by Kendall to encourage beginning readers, according to Jim Ryan.
“This program is for beginning readers and ‘want to be’ readers,” said Ryan, a retired schoolteacher who was born in Pawhuska. “Every child who attends will be able to choose some free books and have some fun with music, singing and games.”
The program is intended for children 7 years old and under. All are welcome.
The Ryan’s visited the Pawhuska library in August of 2012 and had a successful turnout for their reading program. Several local Osage youth and their parents attended the event and each child left with several books.
The Ryans brought 50 young reader-appropriate books for the event and let attendees take them home free of charge. Books included Clifford the Big Red Dog series; Curious George and National Geographic Young Explorer! The Ryans also left 139 books for distribution to all the first and second graders at Pawhuska Indian Camp Elementary School.
This will be the third BARK event for area youth.
