The Osage Nation Education Department will be hosting its annual Summer Enrichment Children’s Camp on July 12-14 and its Youth Camp July 26-28.
According to a news release, each camp is limited to 45-50 children and youth. As of Thursday, July 7, the Children’s Camp has 13 slots open and the youth camp has 19 openings. The education department is still accepting applications for both camps.
The camps will be held at the ON Language Department, 222 W. Main St. in Pawhuska, and will run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The children’s camp is for ages 5-10 and the youth camp is for ages 11 to 15.
Planned activities include beading, Osage board game, Indian dice and visits from various tribal departments including the Osage Minerals Council.
Cherise Lookout, Outreach Coordinator for the Education Department, said it’s important for the Osage children and youth to know about various entities within the Nation.
“The Minerals Council is going to talk about the importance of oil and gas,” Lookout said. “It’s about education that is Osage-related I think students should be aware of.”
Both camps are geared specifically toward Osage children to teach them about their people, culture and government.
Lookout said it’s the only program that reaches out for Osage-only children and youth and gives them the education they might not get anywhere else.
“The focus of it is Osage education,” she said. “It’s a place that they get to be proud of who they are.”
Each participant is required to turn in a completed registration form, Osage CDIB or membership card.
