Osage County high school students are about to get a leg up on planning for their future.
The Osage Nation Education Department is hosting its annual College and Career Fair Nov. 7 at the Osage County Fairgrounds’ Ag Building. Scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the free event is open to all area high school juniors and seniors. Attendees do not need to pre-register, bring transcripts or resumes.
“We’re primarily targeting juniors and seniors since they’re the ones who are about to graduate and they might not necessarily know what they want to do after high school,” said Coley Streater with the Osage Nation Education Department. “Sophomores are more than welcome to attend, though.”
Among the schools slated to send representatives are Bacone College, Pawnee Nation College, Cameron University, Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences, the University of Tulsa, East Central University, Northern Oklahoma College, Rogers State University, Oklahoma Wesleyan University, the University of Central Oklahoma, the University of Oklahoma, Northeastern State University, Tulsa Community College, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, Tri-County Technology Center and Southwestern College from Winfield, Kansas.
TRIO, an outreach and support program under the U.S. Department of Education for disadvantaged and first-generation students, will also be represented at the fair.
According to 2018 data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau through the annual American Community Survey, 18 percent of Osage County adults have a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 24.8 percent of adults statewide.
Recruiters from the United States Marine Corps, Army and Navy are also scheduled to attend. Additionally, more than a dozen area professionals from different career paths will be on hand to answer questions about their careers and what training is required to pursue a job in that field.
