Today Jan. 8 is the filing deadline for Osages interested in running for office of Principal Chief or Assistant Principal Chief.
Interested Osages have until 4:30 p.m. to file candidacy papers and pay filing fees with the Osage Nation Election Office at 608 Kihekah in Pawhuska.
The deadline was extended by two days after wintry weather and dangerously low temperatures prompted area school closings as well as Osage Nation government office closings on Jan. 6-7.
So far, four candidates have filed for chief and one candidate for assistant chief. Those filed for chief are Geoffrey Standing Bear, Margo Gray, current Chief John Red Eagle and Tom Boone. For assistant chief is Raymond Red Corn.
All candidates will be subject to background checks before the ON Election Board certifies the list of candidates. The next Election Board meeting is scheduled for Jan. 16 when certification of the candidates is expected to take place.
