James “Sonny” Leon Robinson Obituary

James “Sonny” Leon Robinson (Wa Zha Hun Ka), 73 years, of Hominy, Oklahoma passed away on November 24, 2021, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Sonny was born in Hominy on May 30, 1948, to James Leon and Ruth Katherine (Hokiahse) Robinson. He graduated from Hominy High School in 1967 and continued his education at Isbell’s University of Beauty Culture in Texas.

He was hand-picked by Neiman Marcus but chose to come home and help his local community in Hominy as a hair stylist and even did many house calls. He worked for Jo Isenring at the Hominy Hotel before owning his own beauty shop called “Sonny’s Hair Design”. Sonny was a member of First Baptist Church in Bloomfield and Winfield in Kansas and the First Baptist Church in Hominy. In 2003, Sonny decided to start working for Sally’s Beauty Supply in Bartlesville and Prattville.  

Sonny is survived by: nephews, Jeffrey Willcox of Hominy; Damon Mashunkashey of Hominy; great-nephew, Randy Walker of Hominy; great-great-nieces and nephews, Rhianna Walker, Trenton Mashunkashey of Lawton, OK; Madisyn Mashunkashey of Broken Arrow, OK; Jayden Mashunkashey of Broken Arrow, OK; Daniel Willcox of Pawhuska, OK; Shampaigne Willcox of Locust Grove, OK.

Sonny is preceded in death by: mother, Ruth Hokiahse; father, James Leon (Blonde) Robinson; sister, Beverly Ann Robinson; uncle, Clarence Hokiahse; cousin, Pricilla Hokiahse; niece, Pam Willcox; nephew, Scott Willcox; great-niece, Arika Wilkerson.

Visitation for Sonny will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Hominy Indian Village Chapel in Hominy, Oklahoma. Services for Sonny will be at 9 a.m., Monday, Nov. 29, 2021, at the Hominy Indian Village Chapel officiated by Mr. John Maker and Reverend David Nagle of the Friends Church in Hominy. Pallbearers will be: Charles Maker, Larry Maker, Tony Maker, Ed Kenworthy, Jayden Mashunkashey, Scott Harmon, Trenton Mashunkashey, and Robert Lewis. Honorary bearer will be Ken McSorley. Musical selections will include “Sunny” by Bobby Hebb. Burial will follow services at the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy.
