Janice K. Mansfield, age 80, of Fairfax, Okla., passed peacefully April 2, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa with her loving family by her side. She joined her mother and daughter in their Heavenly Home after a long battle with her health the past few years.

Janice Kay Powell was born the only child of William “Sonny” Powell and Ava Rae (Riley) Powell-Wilsey on March 3, 1945, at Hamill Hospital in Fairfax. She was the granddaughter of the late W.J. Powell Jr. and Dora (Ponca) Powell (maternal grandparents) and Clifford Lee Riley and Nora Dean Riley (paternal grandparents). Affectionately known as Jan, she was a proud enrolled member of the Osage Nation from the Grayhorse District. She was Deer clan and had been given the name, Humpa To Kah, which translates to “wet moccasin.” Many friends and family also knew her as “Janice K.”

Jan was baptized at the United Methodist Church on March 22, 1959. She received her early education at Fairfax Public Schools before moving to Tulsa with her mother where she attended Monte Cassino School and later Will Rogers High, graduating with the Class of 1963. Jan worked in Tulsa at Dollar Rent A Car where her data entry skills were used in the accounting department. Upon her retirement in 1985 she and her mother Ava moved to Ponca City.

During her years in Ponca, she devoted countless hours assisting and caring for her mother and her aunt Helen Hutchison. They loved to “bird-dog” the streets and neighborhoods of Fairfax and Ponca City. After her mother passed away, Jan moved back to Fairfax in October 2022 to live in the newest housing addition on the hilltop southwest side of town.

Some of her favorite pastimes were spent with her cousins and friends, whether dining out, going to concerts, playing the slots, shopping for shoes, seeing the sights, visiting the beach, or cruising. She enjoyed celebrating Christmas with her cousin Jerri and family in Arkansas, numerous holidays were spent with her friends, one of them being Billie Ponca and her family. Most recently, she spent time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren! She loved her fur babies, Button and Leo. In her younger days, her interests included the great outdoors – camping and fishing for bass.

Jan loved her family and friends; she never met a stranger! Her sweet smile and infectious laughter put a smile on people she encountered. Her favorite color was Purple, but she bled Red as an avid OU Fan … Go Boomer Sooners!

She attended the New Hope Christian Fellowship; was a member of the Pah-Su-Lee Club; and the Hey-Yah Club (both Osage women’s clubs). Jan was faithful to attend the Inlonshka dances and all Osage cultural events.

Left to cherish Jan’s memory are her grandson, Steven Love and family; four grandchildren; seven great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; siblings, Mary Powell, Ariz., and Bill Filener, Tulsa; aunt, Helen Hutchison, Fairfax; cousins Jerri Lane, Ark., Jim and Sandy Lane, Duncan and Mick and Lonna Hutchison, Fairfax.

She joins in Heaven her parents, grandparents, daughter Sylvia Love, many cousins, including Betty Adams and Sherry Mashburn, friend Donna Barrone and her fur baby “Button.”

Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the Grayhorse Chapel with Pastor Taos Barrone officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairfax City Cemetery, 600 S. 8th Street, under the care of the Hunsaker Wooten Funeral Home. Jan will be at the Grayhorse Chapel on Sunday afternoon, April 6, until her funeral service.

Pallbearers are Justin Mashburn, Toby Mashburn, Jack Hutchison, Mick Hutchison, Doug Adams and Craig Crismon.
