Martha Kay (Pepper) Spotted Bear Obituary

Martha Kay Spotted Bear passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, in Pawhuska, Okla. She was 77 years old.

Martha Kay Spotted Bear passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, in Pawhuska, Okla. She was 77 years old.

Martha was born Oct. 6, 1947, in Pawhuska, the daughter of William Robinson and Lavina Rose (Steele) Pepper, Jr. On Oct. 22, 1968, she married Freddie Ray Spotted Bear in Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2014. 

Martha attended Claremore Community College, obtaining her Child Development Associates Degree. She is the first Native American woman in Oklahoma to receive this. She served as an Osage Nation Head Start teacher for 30 years.  She was a member of the Kaw Tribal Executive Council, Advisor for the Kaw Illonshka and was a member of the Kaw Cultural Committee. She was also an original Osage Gourd Club Gourdette and a cook for several committees for the Waxaoli District. On Aug. 9, 1997, using the roach of Johnnie McCauley as a model, Martha designed the insignia for the 1st KC 135 Tanker Unit stationed at McConnell Air Force Base. She was instrumental in honoring the last five surviving Kaw full bloods. Martha loved spending time with her grandkids and attending dances and powwows. 

Surviving family include her children, Freddie and Linda Pratt, Sheaila and Mike Dilbeck, Michele and Mike Hyatt, LaVina and Jasper Clark, and LaRay and Aaron Brake; her brother, Bill Pepper; her sister, Cecilia Coble; grandchildren, Kelsey Pratt, Morgan Tucker, Taylor Mintzmyer, Myles Pratt, Casey Pratt, Destanee Donaldson, April Robertson, M.D. Dilbeck, Henry Joe Smith, D. Easley, Valarie Burris, Jeremy Spotted Bear, Bo-D Spotted Bear, Cory Spotted Bear, Tomasita Little Crow, Chet Brake, and Cole Brake; 60 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends. In addition to her husband, Fred, Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Bryan Pratt, and grandson, Clifford Robertson.

Rosary will be held Monday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Wakon Iron Chapel in Pawhuska. Traditional services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 8 a.m. at Wakon Iron Chapel. Eddy Red Eagle will officiate. Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pawhuska. Father Emmanuel Nduka will officiate. Interment will be in the Pawhuska City Cemetery.
