Lifelong Pawhuska resident Melissa Currey passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024, in the Ascension St. John Hospital, Tulsa. She was 60 years old.

Lifelong Pawhuska resident Melissa Currey passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024, in the Ascension St. John Hospital, Tulsa. She was 60 years old.   

Melissa was born April 18, 1963, in Pawhuska, the daughter of Francis E. “Buddy” Simpkins and Mary Ann (Hill) Simpkins. She attended schools in Pawhuska, graduating from Pawhuska High School. On December 3, 1983, she married Rex Allen Currey in Pawhuska. Melissa was a member of the Osage Nation.  She served as the Superintendent of Real Estate Services for the BIA and served on the Osage Minerals Council. She loved spending time with her grandkids, going to Bluestem Lake, shopping and her “Girls Days”. She always looked forward to the In-Lon-Shka dances every June. Melissa was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Surviving family include her husband, Rex Currey, of the home; son Ahren Currey and wife, Lacie; daughter Morgan Cass and husband, Bruce; grandchildren Tyler Currey, Emmett Smith, Leo Currey, Briar Smith, Nolan Currey, Alyssa Cass, and Logan, Corlin, William and Kaleb Cass; siblings Celeste Reed, Virgil David Simpkins, R.E. Yarbrough, Lee Ann Ammons, Steve Currey and wife, Pam; Susan Downing and husband, Mark.  Melissa was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ann Simpkins; fathers James Otis Windsor and Francis “Buddy” Simpkins; godparents Buck and Maudie Cheshewalla; father-in-law Leo “Bud” Currey; mother-in-law Ramona Currey; and sister-in-law Kay Currey.

A Rosary will be held Thursday, March 14, 7:00PM, at the Wakon Iron Chapel.  Traditional services will be Friday, March 15, 8:00AM, at the Chapel. Eddie Redeagle will officiate. Mass will follow at 10:00AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Father Chris Daigle will officiate. Interment will follow in the Pawhuska City Cemetery.
