Ninth Osage Nation Congress prepares for Tzi Sho Session

With just a few days left before the start of the fall session on Sept. 3, here is a sneak preview of legislation up for consideration

Legislative bills and resolutions sponsored by members of the Ninth Osage Nation Congress are being filed for consideration during the 2024 Tzi Sho Session starting on Sept. 3 in Pawhuska.

The following legislative items are currently on file with the Congressional Clerk’s Office and more will be coming. The following is a short breakdown of what’s already been filed for the upcoming 24-day fall session:

  • ONCA 24-76 (sponsored by Congresswoman Alice Goodfox) is “An Act to amend the criminal procedure code to include a Chapter on Probation and Parole.”
  • ONCA 24-81 (sponsored by Congresswoman Maria Whitehorn) is “An Act To amend the Osage Nation Health Benefit Act (in the Osage code) to increase the benefit of members under sixty-five (65) up to $1,000.”
  • ONCA 24-84 (sponsored by Congressman Joe Tillman) is “An Act To amend the election code to make the candidate filing period three (3) days.”
  • ONCA 24-85 (sponsored by Congressional Speaker Pam Shaw) is “An Act to authorize and appropriate $35,000 to the Public Office Filing Fees Fund.”
  • ONCA 24-86 (Shaw) is “An Act to establish a revolving fund for public office filing fees for members of the Osage Nation.”
  • ONCR 24-20 (sponsored by Congresswoman Jodie Revard) is “A Resolution to approve the amendments to the bylaws of the Place to Borrow Money public purpose corporation in accordance with the Articles of Incorporation.”

The bills and resolutions will move through the legislative process, which includes initial consideration at the select/ standing committee level and possible amendments to the legislation before ultimately being voted on by the 12-member Congress. More legislation will also be filed for the session, when the bills and resolutions are ready for consideration of action.

    Polacca is part of the Osage News team that was awarded the Native American Journalists Association's Elias Boudinet Free Press Award in 2014 and has won numerous NAJA media awards, as well as awards from the Oklahoma Press Association and SPJ Oklahoma Pro Chapter, for storytelling coverage and photography.

    Polacca earned his bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University and also participated in the former American Indian Journalism Institute at the University of South Dakota where he was introduced to the basics of journalism and worked with seasoned journalists there and later at The Forum daily newspaper covering the Fargo, N.D. area where he worked as the weeknight reporter.
