Northern California Osage meeting set for Sept. 26 in Petaluma

The Northern California Osage fall gathering is scheduled Saturday Sept. 26 starting at 10 a.m. at the Community Center in Petaluma.

The NCO meeting agenda includes presentations by Osage Nation Social Services on services available to Osage children and families nationwide for child welfare management, foster care and adoption. The presentation by ONSS representatives will also include steps on how to become a certified Osage foster or adoptive family for Osage children currently awaiting placement in temporary or permanent homes.

There will also be presentations by the Wah-Zha-Zhi Cultural Center on cooking traditional foods and women’s shawl making. Renee Harris of the WCC will be instructing and providing information to those interested in helping cook and prepare the mid-day meal with traditional Osage food that will be served at the meeting.

Other invited guests and speakers include Osage Minerals Councilwoman Kathryn Redcorn and other elected Osage Nation officials.

Osage writer Ruby Murray will also lead a short workshop (open to all ages and levels of experience) titled Personal Migrations: Stories of Home: “We’ll consider how place and Osage family history connect. Taking inspiration from Sherman Alexie, Carter Revard, and John Joseph Mathew’s Talking to the Moon, we’ll consider ways to enter stories we want to tell. We’ll write mini-essays or stories using topics or prompts provided.”

There will also be Indian dice games provided by the WCC with an inaugural Indian dice tournament at the meeting.

The Petaluma Community Center is located at 320 N. McDowell. For questions, more information or to RSVP for the meeting, email osages@northerncaliforniaosage.org.
