Osage News expands election coverage

The Osage News is expanding its election coverage.

On Jan. 19, the Editorial Board amended the policy and procedure for covering announcement dinners, rallies and other candidate events during Osage elections. Moving forward, News staff will attend in their professional capacity and provide coverage of the events.

Six candidates will be on the ballot for the April 4 Osage Nation Primary Election. Running for Principal Chief is Angela Pratt, Geoffrey Standing Bear and Joe Tillman. Running for Assistant Principal Chief is Joseph Thornton, Thomas Trumbly and RJ Walker.

Six upcoming candidate events have been confirmed: 

–       Saturday, Jan. 22, Candidate Rally for the re-election of Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear at the First Americans Museum, Thistle Room, from 1-3 p.m. in Oklahoma City.

–       Sunday, Jan. 23, Candidate Announcement Dinner for Joe Tillman for Chief. The dinner begins at 5 p.m. at the Grayhorse Community Building.

–       Sunday, Jan. 30, Candidate Rally for the re-election of Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear at the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks from 1-3 p.m.

–       Friday, Feb. 4, Candidate Announcement Dinner for Angela Pratt for Chief. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Hominy Village Community Building.

–       Saturday, Feb. 5, Candidate Announcement Dinner for Angela Pratt for Chief. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. at the Grayhorse Village Community Building.  

–       Sunday, Feb. 6, Candidate Announcement Dinner for Angela Pratt for Chief. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. at the Pawhuska Indian Camp, Wakon Iron Hall.  

Pratt said due to the rise of health concerns in the community she has delayed holding announcement gatherings until February. She added that her dinners will adhere to Covid safety precautions.

Standing Bear said he is planning dinners for each Osage district and those dates, places and times are to be decided.

Tillman said he will be holding candidate fundraisers at the Chickasaw Art Gallery in Bricktown, Oklahoma City, and another candidate fundraiser in Nichols Hills, Tulsa. Dates and times are to be decided.

The assistant chief candidates did not have any upcoming events to report.  

The Osage News is hosting a candidate debate for all six of the primary candidates on Feb. 12 at the Hominy Community Building, beginning at 1 p.m. The event will be streamed live on the News’ Facebook page.
