The Osage Language Department is announcing open registration for 2023-2024 community language classes with fall session starting in September.
Virtual and in-person classes begin on Sept. 5, according to a news release. Various proficiency levels include Children, Parents, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Verbs, and Orthography.
All classes are free and open to community members. First-time students are encouraged to begin with the Orthography class in order to learn the sounds of the language as well as the writing system.
“Our team enjoys working together with the community to keep the language alive,” Braxton Redeagle, Director of the Language Department said in a statement. “The perpetuation of our language relies on a collective effort, and is vital to our sovereignty as a nation. We welcome all students, wherever they may be in their language journey. As long as you do your best—𐓷𐓘𐓯𐓤𐓘—the only wrong way to speak your language is to not speak it at all.”
Over the past year, the language department has grown to 11 teachers offering 19 classes, the release stated. New language teachers this year include Dora Williams, who will teach classes for parents and children, and Noah Shadlow, who will teach the beginner class held in Hominy.
