The most read Osage News articles of 2024

Our writers and columnists covered a wide array of topics this year. From Mattel creating a Barbie of Maria Tallchief, Osage singer Scott George being nominated for an Oscar, a federal judge ordering the removal of 84 wind turbines, an Osage family advocating for their daughter, and the existential question, “What kind of Osage are you?”

We calculated the Top 10 most-read articles from the Osage News website this year and came up with the following.

Here are the top 10 most-read articles from 2024.

10. Barbie welcomes Maria Tallchief to the Barbie Inspiring Women Series

    Coming in at number 10 is the Nov. 14 article about Maria Tallchief, America’s first prima ballerina and proud Osage woman, becoming one of the world’s most recognizable toys – a Barbie doll.

    9. What kind of Osage are you?

    Coming in at number 9, this May 3 column by Osage writer Ruby Hansen Murray sparked much conversation and debate. After attending a talk by Hominy elder Dr. Steven Pratt, she relayed the question to Osages everywhere, “What kind of Osage are you?”

    8.   New Osage Nation boundary signs will no longer say ‘Reservation’

    Coming in at number 8, this Aug. 29 article about the state of Oklahoma replacing all tribal nation reservation signs angered the Osage community. The wording on the new signs will no longer say “Reservation.”

    7. Osage singer Scott George on his Oscar Nomination

    Coming in at number 8, this Jan. 23 Q&A with Osage singer Scott George revealed how the singer got his start and his motivation for composing the Oscar-nominated song for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

    6. Historic Win: Judge orders Enel to remove turbines by December 2025

    Coming in at number 7, this Dec. 19 article details the federal judge’s order for Italian wind farm giant, Enel and its subsidiaries, to remove 84 wind turbines from the Osage reservation landscape.

    5. Cabin of Ho-tah-moie, aka John Stink, lost to wildfire

    Coming in at number 6, this Oct. 30 article told the story of how a wildfire raged south of Pawhuska and burned down the cabin of the famous reclusive Osage, Ho-tah-moie.

    4. Osage-owned ‘Saucy Calf’ Restaurant to open in Pawhuska

    Coming in at number 5, this Feb. 5 article about Jamison and Asa Concha opening a restaurant that served Native American food with Cody and Lauren Garnett delighted the community. Sadly, the restaurant closed 10 months later.

    3. Skiatook High School teacher under investigation

    Coming in at number 3, this Aug. 24 follow-up article revealed that the Skiatook High School teacher who had assigned an alleged inappropriate paper on Christianity to his students was now under investigation. He later resigned his teaching position.

    2. Skiatook HS pulls assignment on Christianity after Osage family protests

    Coming in at number 2, this Aug. 16 article shocked and angered the Osage community. After an Osage student at Skiatook High School showed her mother her school assignment on Christianity, her family protested to school leaders about religious indoctrination.

    1. ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ receives 10 Oscar nominations

    And finally, the most-read article of 2024 is this Jan. 24 article announcing the 10 Oscar nominations received for Martin Scorsese’s, “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The film, based on the bestselling book by David Grann of the same name, didn’t win any Oscars but the Osage story was told to the world all the same.

In 2014 she helped lead the Osage News to receive NAJA's Elias Boudinot Free Press Award. The Osage News won Best Newspaper from the SPJ-Oklahoma Chapter in their division 2018-2022. Her award-winning work has been published in Indian Country Today, The Washington Post, the Center for Public Integrity, NPR, the Associated Press, Tulsa World and others. She currently resides in Pawhuska, Okla., with her husband and together they share six children, two dogs and two cats.
