Three Osages have filed their candidacy papers – thus far – for the 2012 General Election in which six Osage Nation Congressional seats are up for grabs.
On day two of the filing period, no Osages filed candidacy papers, according to the ON Election Office on March 16. The filing period stretches through April 2.
The day before, three candidates filed their papers by closing time. Berbon Hamilton was the first to file and later in the day Rosemary Shaw and John Maker did the same.
Shaw, who is unrelated to Osage News Editor Shannon Shaw, is the former manager of the Osage Nation Counseling Center. She is from the Grayhorse District and is the sister to Dr. Ron Shaw, who sits on the Osage Nation Health Authority.
Maker is an instructor with the ON Language Department and teaches classes at the department’s Hominy site. He is from the Hominy District and also ran for a Congressional seat in the 2010 election.
The six highest vote recipients on Election Day (June 4) will serve on the Third Osage Nation Congress for four years.
The Congress meets twice annually for 24-day regular sessions as well as special sessions which are called when necessary by either the Principal Chief or written approval of at least two-thirds of the Congressional body.
The Hun-Kah Session of the Second ON Congress starts Monday March 19. It will be the final regular session for that Congressional body before the June election which determines who will serve on the Third ON Congress.
